BACKFLOW DEVICE / TESTING

LETTER FROM THE INSPECTOR

My name is Dan Buser, founder of Rainbow Sprinklers and Drainage in 1988. I thank you for your patronage all these years.

At Rainbow Sprinklers, we strive to do our best in our service to you. I am writing to make you aware of one component of sprinkler systems that is often overlooked. This is the Backflow Preventor Device, commonly known as a BFD.

Daniel J Buser

NYS Certified Backflow Inspector since 1995

License Number 3340

WHAT IS A BFD

A BFD is an apparatus designed to prevent water from flowing backwards in the piping system.

HOW DOES BACKFLOW OCCUR

  • Back Siphonage which is a reverse of normal flow in a system caused by a negative pressure can be caused by opening a fire hydrant, water main breaks, etc.
  • Back pressure is a product of imbalanced pressure and flow in plumbing. A common cause is water heaters and boilers. When water heats up, it expands, which increases the pressure.

WHY IS IT IMPORTANT

  • Lawn sprinklers are in the ground where fertilizers, pesticides / herbicides are used to keep the lawn looking good.
  • If backflow occurs, these contaminants could potentially go back into the household water system. A lot of money is invested in a property; the value of BFD testing is overlooked.

NEW YORK STATE DEPARTMENT OF HEALTH

New York State and every water district mandate that a BFD be installed on a sprinkler system to protect your household water (i.e. drinking, bathing, cooking, and household chores).

NYS Department of Health states that once A BFD is installed, inspections are required once a year.

Check out more info on NYSDOH website here.

BACKFLOW TEST

BFDs are mechanical devices, and like any mechanical device, they can break down and fail.

Every device is equipped to be tested without being removed from the irrigation system.

It is a simple test that must be done by a Certified Backflow Tester.
